The eighth volume of the Ukrainian Language Dictionary is released

The Ukrainian language dictionary in 20 volumes covers the commonly used vocabulary of modern Ukrainian literary language, common terms, dialecticisms, and word combinations. The sources used in the dictionary reflect the vocabulary of literary texts from the end of the XVIII century to the present day, the Bible, folk art, publicistic writing, popular science and science, the language of the media etc.


The Eighth Volume of the Dictionary (L–MISHURNY) contains 9,115 dictionary entries.

On May 18, 2017, at the Kyiv House of Scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine were held a presentation of the two-volume edition of the "Ukrainian-Georgian-Russian-English-German-French dictionary of metallurgical terms" and a scientific seminar "International "Ukrainian-Georgian-Russian-English-German-French dictionary of metallurgical terms" — cooperation without borders".

XIV International Scientific Conference "Modern Problems of Lexicography"

On May 16-17, 2019, the XIV International Scientific Conference "Modern Problems of Lexicography" was held at the Institute of Linguistics named after Yakub Kolas, Center for Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The scientific event was co-organized by the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno (Belarus), the Institute of Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences (Russia), the Institute of Slavonic Studies at Alpen-Adria-Universität (Austria), the Institute of Russian Studies at University of Warsaw (Poland), the Kharkiv Lexicography Society, Kharkiv Polytechnical University.

This time the conference, which traditionally brings together leading linguists-lexicographers from different countries, was attended by specialists from Austria, Belarus, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, France, and the Czech Republic. In total, more than 80 applications were submitted, the participants submitted about 45 universities and research institutions.
 

During the conference, the scientists discussed the fundamental problems of the theory and practice of lexicography, its methodological and linguistic aspects, the urgent issues of terminology, historical, dialectal, translated and author's lexicography, as well as the development of dictionaries of various types and genres, and interesting dictionary projects with the use of corpus and other modern computer technology.

The plenary session was opened by the director of the Institute of Linguistics, I.L. Kopylov, who summed up the lexicographical achievements of the staff of this institution over the 90-year history of its operation.

A special place in the report was devoted to the reflection of the current state of lexicographic at the Institute: I.L. Kopylov noted that the dictionary making is one of the priorities of the institution and outlined the prospects for the Institute of Linguistics in the field of lexicography.

The report by L.V. Rychkov (Belarus) "Technological breakthrough in lexicography: new opportunities or new challenges?" had a wide response among the conference participants. V.V. Dubicinski (Poland) and T. Roytar (Austria) introduced a new type of dictionary that describes the meanings of the lexical parallels of the Ukrainian and German languages, which makes it possible to reveal the national and cultural specifics of words in a systematic way. G. M. Sklyarevska (Russia) turned to the subject of the classification of dictionaries and finding a place for explanatory lexicographic sources in the general typology of dictionaries. V. P. Rusak and Yu.S. Getsevich (Belarus) told about their achievements, which allowed them to optimize the work of lexicographers and successfully publish the Orthoepic Dictionary of Belarusian Language. The interest among the conference participants was aroused by the report "Philosophy of the Dictionary" by V.A. Shyrokov (Ukraine), founder of the Ukrainian scientific school of linguistic technologies, author of the information theory of lexicographic systems.
